The foundation of every tactical masterclass starts on the training ground. It’s where players and managers alike spend most of their time, running drills, refining plans, and working on physical preparation as they look for that vital edge in the next game.
In FM27, we’ve given Training a usability refresh and a system overhaul. It’s easier to navigate, more intuitive to interact with, and more tailored towards giving you the best possible chance of winning matches. The goal is clear: this is where managers spend their time, so the experience must deliver a level of control you’ll want to devote your attention to.
In addition, we’ve introduced Tactical Effectiveness, a brand-new system that gives you more information than ever to connect your training schedules with your tactical style and football philosophy. Your tactical approach, management choices, and transfer dealings will all influence just how effective your tactic proves to be.
Underdogs shocking the world with a deep cup run, champions cruising to back-to-back titles – it’s not by chance, the journey starts on the training ground.

Winning football matches is at the core of any training session, with plans to organise and develop your players to fully understand and execute your tactical philosophy. You’re trying to find the formula that gets the very best out of everyone who steps out onto the pitch.
We’ve been curating player feedback alongside internal analysis to help identify the specific areas that needed a refresh, starting with Training's place within FM27. To better reflect core responsibilities, we’ve moved Training to become one of the Primary Nav Bar areas. In tandem with the wider UI changes across the game, you’ll have a cleaner interface to work with and require less clicks to create your blueprint.
The ability to replicate training schedules has returned, and the interface has greater visual cues about player load in the weeks ahead - not just your immediate fixtures. The result is more time to focus on assembling sessions that yield visible results.
However, the biggest changes come under-the-hood, as we’ve redefined the core purpose of training and the benefits that can be gained from it. We’ve shaped this through our conversations with contacts inside the footballing world, allowing us to better understand the nuances of training schedules and replicate that in a more comprehensible manner.
In FM27, each of your squads will have a specific purpose to work towards. Your senior squad is more attuned with match preparation, focusing more on team cohesion and tactical understanding. This is led through entirely new training sessions centred on improving your team’s overall effectiveness by working on the elements that will bring you success. Want your team to be an intense pressing unit? You can train for that. Is work needed in the build-up phase? You can train for that. Everything that goes into building a tactically effective side can now be drilled on the training pitch to give you the best chance of success.
There is still room for 1-1 player development, with individual training sessions giving you the opportunity to improve your players and give them an extra edge. To really take your wonderkids to the next level, you’ll now need to balance their long-term Individual Training and personal development priorities with your short-term need to win matches.
So, whether you’re in the lower leagues or preparing for the FIFA World Cup™, you’ve now got more impactful, easier-to-access tools to mould your squad into a team of winners.
Intrinsically linked to our changes to Training was ensuring that it moves in step with a brand-new system introduced for FM27, Tactical Effectiveness.
This new system is underpinned by 4 core areas: Tactical Understanding, Player Ability, Player Buy In and Next Match Information.
These elements are measured in gauges that you’ll see across various elements of your career; Tactics, Training, and Recruitment, giving you the detail on how well your team understands what you’re asking of them and how well they are able to execute your philosophy. Your Tactical Effectiveness will help inform your choices across the game. Every matchday, every training session, and every transfer decision are now more informed to help you build a cohort team of world beaters.
This framework is supported by Tactical Complexity, a new measure of the volume of team, player and opposition instructions. This creates an immersive depth of choice that allows you to adapt to the exact job and level you’re managing in. There’s now a clear trade off in the game between complexity and ability – for example, fluid, free flowing football and relentless counter-pressing may prove to be too complicated for those at a lower league level.
Both Tactical Effectiveness and Tactical Complexity will have you weighing up the benefits of executing styles at both ends of the tactical spectrum. Do you implement a simple, plug-and-play approach that may get you instant results but will sooner be found out - or work on a deeper, more unique system that will take time to learn but potentially produce a longer term pay-off?
As alluded to earlier, expect Tactical Effectiveness to be an integral data point in Scout Reports. You’ll have more data at your disposal to make decisions on potential new signings, so you’ll need to evaluate whether targets have the attributes and playstyle to be an instant impact within your shape, or if they’ll need more time to learn new concepts. This drives the need for more strategic thinking but get it right and you can really reap the benefits of your team playing to its strengths.
In time, you'll develop a system that becomes synonymous with you and your philosophy, which in turn will feel more consequential to the world you're managing in.
Like we see in the professional game with managers brought in with a distinct and often unwavering philosophy, Tactical Effectiveness ushers in a more authentic approach to squad building and tactical development, that will reward you as your identity and authority increases across your career. It’s evolution and progression will fluctuate with every tailored training session and tactical adjustment. With tactics continuing to evolve across the professional game – it's time to adapt or be left behind.
Coupling the Tactical evolution with refreshed Training control creates a much more intuitive system that delivers greater flexibility on your squad planning than ever before. Shape players as individuals so they come together as one.
You’ve just learned about shaping your identity on the pitch, next, we’ll dive into the ways you can shape it off the pitch with improvements to our Manager Creator tool.
Combining community feedback and internal reviews, our key goals in this area of FM27 were:
Tactical Effectiveness is an overarching feature in FM27 that has connections with Training, Tactics, Scouting and more, building on the previous Tactical Familiarity system. The four core areas that you influence as a manager will influence your team’s Tactical Effectiveness: Player Ability, Next Match Information, Player Buy-In and Tactical Understanding.
Gauges that are visible in the Tactics, Training, and Recruitment screens will signify your team’s comfort level with your tactical instructions, and therefore the likelihood of them executing the instructions to a high level. Look for these gauges to move throughout your career as you adjust tactics, recruit players and connect with your squad. Additionally, as you progress, your tactical preferences can become more effective, but this can be counteracted as competing tactical styles may become dangerous against your own.
In Scout Reports, Tactical Effectiveness will be visible to indicate if transfer targets may be the right fit for your squad and setup. As Tactical Effectiveness constantly fluctuates due to your decisions, player performances, wider football events and more, you'll have to balance consistency with agility as a manager to optimise this area of the game.
Tactical Complexity is a new measurement in FM27, intrinsically tied to Tactical Effectiveness, that is influenced by the positions and instructions you set. A consideration must also be your squad’s ability to take on complex instructions; a detailed plan may not be effective when managing teams in lower divisions. Similarly, a simple tactical plan may be instantly effective, but have limited potential; while complex tactics may struggle to have an impact initially as players adapt to it, but have a higher long-term ceiling for effectiveness.
The Training area is now accessible from the primary navigation bar, so you can quickly switch to Training no matter which screen you're viewing. When in the Training area, multiple user interface changes and layout options have been implemented to ensure fewer clicks are required to access common actions. Additionally, the ability to copy and paste training plans is once again available, so creating recurring schedules with multiple elements is now a simpler process. You will also immediately see more visual indicators on the physical load that your training plan will have on the squad, both for the current week and the longer period ahead.
This combines with previously-announced user interface and navigation changes – such as the ability to select the landing screen when selecting Training, to make this area more intuitive, simple and optimised to how you play.
Aligning with real-world behaviour and direct feedback from football coaches, Training options in FM27 place more emphasis on building a plan towards the next match and opposition. The previous Units system, primarily centred around developing player attributes, has been replaced with options and setups that focus on the goal of executing a tactical plan in the next match. Along with the work on tactical familiarity, sessions can focus on more cohesion and shared understanding within the squad, improving the chances of playing to their potential in the tactics you set.
Underneath the user interface, systems have been adapted so that your decisions and plans in Training have a more tangible effect on your preparedness for the next challenge. For example, training sessions can focus on a team’s ability to press high up the pitch, or sit in a low block.
Yes. Through individual training options you can still work as a manager, or work with your coaching staff, to improve and adapt player attributes. Use personal training instructions to help players learn new traits, positions and more. Balancing this with team training plans will maximise a player’s chance of both improving personal attributes, then applying those improvements to executing your tactical plan.
Yes. Added to FM27 following community feedback is the ability to create training plans with your international team during a camp, so you can better prepare your selected squad ahead of tournaments and other key fixtures.
The gameplay shown is from a development build of the game, meaning it is subject to change before release. Additional work will be focused on further visual optimisation and incorporating feedback from recent user testing. This build contains information that is still under approval process by right holders and may contain data that does not, at this time, accurately reflect real world data.
Yes. The next FM27 deep dive will be a written piece that focuses on manager customisation and the updated appearance of newgens.
