FM27: 2D Match Engine, In-Game Editor and Deeper World Upgrades

Immersing you deeper and beyond your club into the wider football world has been at the heart of FM27’s development.

Beyond the showcase of what’s new in FM27, there are many more upgrades that elevate your career alongside some further quality of life changes. The 2D Match Engine has been enhanced to refine your view from the digital dugout, while the In-Game Editor (IGE) has been reformatted to give you more power and control when customising your save.

That’s not all. Further upgrades to advice, the interface, interaction, data, competitions and the database add depth, invite discovery and give you more tools to dominate your rivals from day one.

Different dimension, same feeling

In our Match Day Experience deep dive we spotlighted the enhancements to the graphics engine, but we appreciate that the classic 2D view is still the preferred perspective for some in the digital dugout.

So, based on your feedback, we’ve improved the experience across the pitch. The ball and player discs are now smaller, with a stronger shadow on the ball. Player discs now also use feet rather than arrows and there’s increased transparency to the goal nets.

These changes combine to create something more impactful and familiar for those who appreciate the top-down perspective for those injury-time winners.

More power at your fingertips

Another area upgraded based on your feedback and our internal reviews is the In-Game Editor.

With clear improvements to both usability and performance, the IGE has got a brand-new interface and is now a full-screen experience throughout. Information has been better grouped to reduce clicks, your default active tab is not only better indicated, but you will also see contextual information for editable fields. For editing, the most essential elements and data will be made more prominent for ease.

The more information you can see immediately, and the more directly you can action changes the more confident you can be in the adjustments you make. So, whether you’re an experienced editor or a first-time player, you’ll have the information you need to make deeper and more meaningful changes to customise your game world.

Messages that mean more

Several other game areas have received attention in FM27 to level up your experience and give you quicker access to the information you need.

In our initial User Interface and Immersion deep dives, we highlighted that messages have taken a big leap forward. There we showcased selected examples but are now shining the spotlight further to highlight more of what you can expect when you start your first FM27 career.

You will now receive more stronger monthly reports, giving you deeper insights into your club’s finances, the performances of your young players out on loan and how the board and fans are rating your current performances. At the end of the season, meanwhile, you’ll also see the top performers in your league and at your club recognised with an awards-focused message.

The annual NXGN 50 message has also been elevated, with the top 50 wonderkids now shown directly in the body of the message. No hopping between tabs or opening a separate article needed – your new scouting shortlist is right in front of you.

It’s not just the next generation of superstars you’ve got a clearer overview of. The upgraded scouting progress message gives you a direct list of players and ratings, with both list and card views available. This allows you to make quicker decisions on where you focus your budget for the season ahead.

Elsewhere, the fitness tests message has been improved to showcase all players who’ve undergone one in a single table, alongside the outcome of the test. This sits alongside an under-the-hood revamp of how head and facial injuries are treated in FM27 based on conversations with contacts in professional football.

Developed through conversations with the medical team at the Professional Footballers’ Association, there is now a concussion injury recovery protocol in place for players that requires explicit clearance by a neurologist for them to return to action. You’ll be able to see their progress throughout the process, with language and insights update across the Medical Centre, fitness reports, return to training messages and player status tooltips.

Supporting our improvements to Training and Tactical Effectiveness are upgrades to messages relating to Match Preparation, Training Review and Training Schedule.

You’ve now got the capacity to directly set match preparation types for every scheduled session in the lead up to a game, while the return of the regular training breakdown gives you a clear performance overview and the quick ability to praise or criticise your players.

You can also now quickly edit training schedules each week direct from your messages, whether you’re a club or international manager, giving you more power to ensure your stars are focusing on what matters most ahead of your next big fixture.

The examples shown here represent just a small showcase of what you can expect in FM27, with dozens more for you to discover when you begin your first save.

Advice that powers decision-making

Underpinning these improvements to Messages is a widespread elevation of the quality and volume of advice you receive from your backroom team.

We’ve previously mentioned that the dugout system during matches now features more insights on how your opposition manager is tweaking their approach as well as when you want to employ or stop using one.

That staff advice also comes throughout the week. All suggested steps from staff meetings are surfaced directly in a message, with quick links allowing you to action them all at once or focus on the ones that you deem most important.

You’ll now get more advice around transfers too, from the initial scouting phase when you’ve got recruitment focuses in progress through to live advice during negotiations with players. You’ll also notice that Out of Possession player roles have been added to the key attributes section of the Player Database, giving you more confidence that your new recruits will match your tactical philosophy.

Tools to give you a richer experience

To bring more vibrancy and depth to your experience, we’ve worked directly with our licensors and partners to add branded backgrounds to the game. As of now, a total of 19 of these are authentically represented, giving you a stronger sense of place and space when managing in a relevant competition. These change dependent on the competition you’re playing in, making it easier to tinker with your team selection for the games ahead.

Whoever you manage, we’ve incorporated further changes to give you more insight to a player’s status and to the world around you.

Status flags on a player can now again stack up to three, while four new status flags have been introduced to disclose whether a player is undertaking a language course, a coaching badge, leadership training or has been made available for reserve/youth team action.

Observing these flags will also be possible if you choose to start a career unemployed, as you can now once again view shortlists and the player database while you’re waiting for the right opportunity to arise.

The seasonal and historic Best XIs have returned, while within your calendar links have been readded to allow quick access to more information on relevant events and entities.

Another efficiency can be found on the Captains screen, where the ability to drag and drop has been restored. Communicating with players and other managers in game will be smoother thanks to some additional interaction improvements. You’ll now be able to congratulate a player for multiple awards instead of just one, and you’ll get more clarity on why someone won’t talk to an unhappy player for you. You’ll also see AI managers be a little more lenient when they’re looking to recall a loanee.

Deeper data to fuel decisions

Finding those marginal gains to help your team push on is improved in FM27 with upgrades to data in and out of matches.

You’ll receive more Data Hub-based messages giving you key findings ahead of games, with the arrows opening tiles with more information.

Various statistics now carry a greater decimal precision, giving you even more granular detail on the following:

  • xA per 90
  • Dribbles per 90
  • Shots on Target per 90
  • Open play Key Passes per 90
  • Chances Created per 90
  • xG per 90
  • Non-penalty xG per 90
  • Key Tackles per 90

The Out of Possession Defensive Actions stat now considers fouls as a defensive action in its calculation, while in the match you’ll discover that player passes are now detailed as Short, Medium or Long, and that the total number of completed ones is now recorded alongside the success rate.

Further Match and Graphical improvements

Within matches, there’s more to look out for.

Your players now look directly at the referee when carded, fouling, pleading, or appealing, and their teammates react to a red card using the recently added 'look-at' system.

Pre-set-piece gestures have added to free-kicks, crowd audio now includes drums for those clubs that use them in real life, and a new cloth physics system adds more realistic movements to the flags of those officials running the lines.

For those of you that like to revisit the action, past matches now have a separate set of playback speed preferences to live matches. Additionally, highlights of your past fixtures can now be watched back as soon as you leave the match instead of you needing to continue forward first.

Lastly, in a move to that mirrors real life developments, we’ve incorporated the Daylight Offside rule that is being trialled in the Canadian Premier League this season. This is a setting that you’ll also discover within the Pre-Game Editor, both for turning it off but also adding it to other competitions.

A deeper football world

More than 18 million database changes and 1,500 competition updates have been made for FM27, where there’s more choice than ever of where you manage with the introduction of two new licensed leagues.

These changes include (but are not limited to): the implementation of the league restructures introduced in Northern Ireland and Wales, as well as new cup competitions in Chile and Peru. Swiss-style league formats have been introduced for Women’s League Cup competitions in England, France and Japan, while a raft of changes have been made to qualifying and continental competitions in North America and Africa to reflect real-life developments.

English work permits have also been updated based on new governmental and football association guidelines. Competition bands have been regraded, while Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) permits are now limited to Under-23 players, with the rules screen showing the cut-off birth date for that season. Should a player already hold one, they will keep it for that season.

The other key rule implementation for FM27 is our adoption of FIFA’s new Women’s Football staff mandate.

This requires women’s teams in FIFA-governed competitions to employ a minimum of two female backroom staff, with at least one holding the Head Coach or Assistant Coach role. This mandate has been introduced in a way that ensures compliance for both human and AI-managed teams, while minimising disruptions to existing saves and staff recruitment workflows.

Elsewhere, you’ll discover a number of fixture scheduling improvements and fixes for outstanding issues that weren’t addressed in updates for FM26. These include (but are not limited to):

  • UEFA Champions League: Cannot play more than 2 matches against a team from the same nation in the League Phase
  • UEFA Champions League: In the Group Stage teams from the same nation will no longer be drawn to play each other
  • Asia & UEFA Club Competitions: Teams will no longer play 3 consecutive games at home or away
  • England: City rivals no longer play at home at the same day/time
  • England: The EFL Trophy Group Stage home/away fixtures correct for each club
  • Bundesliga: First and second half of the season have the same schedule with reversed home team
  • Bundesliga: Maximum Club TV Slots per season now adhered to
  • MLS: Prevent teams playing back-to-back matches against the same opponent
  • Norway: B Teams do not play on the same day as the First Team
  • Portuguese Premier League: Realistic scheduling of derby matches between the big 3 teams throughout the season
  • South America: Matches no longer scheduled on a Friday for continental club competitions
  • Turkiye: Improved fixture scheduling for teams that play in the latter stages of European competition
  • Asian Women’s National Team Coefficient system fully implemented
  • Updated Sorting Rules for all FIFA competitions

From a better viewing experience for those managing with the 2D top-down view to upgrades to the In-Game Editor and much more besides, FM27 is packed with quality-of-life upgrades that enrich your time in the dugout and authentically immerse you in the save universe beyond your club.

Coming soon, we’ll show you FM27 in action with a livestream on the Football Manager YouTube channel.

FM27 Deeper World Upgrades FAQs

  • Has the classic 2D match engine view received any improvements for FM27?

Yes. As you watch a match unfold you now have greater detail and visual cues to track the match, which incorporates community feedback. This includes making the ball and player discs smaller, allowing for both to be a more realistic fit within the 2D pitch. Changes to shadows and net transparency, alongside more minor tweaks, create a familiar design that allow you to easily follow the action.

  • What improvements can be expected for the In-Game Editor for FM27?

Aligning with the advances made in FM27’s user interface and navigation, the In-Game Editor has undergone design changes, influenced by community feedback and our internal reviews, to make it more intuitive to use. With a focus on data presentation, the In-Game Editor is more of a full-screen experience, spotlighting the most common areas to interact with. To further help with navigation, check the signifiers for your default active tab, plus the tooltips on editable fields.

This, alongside a general uplift in performance and smoothness, help users of the Editor make quick changes that can transform an FM27 save.

  • Are there additional changes to overall flow and delivery of information in FM27?

Yes. Along with the key changes covered in the previous user interface deep dive, changes to the delivery of messages make the information you receive clearer and more helpful. Adjustments include the reports on your own performance from the board and supporters; the annual NXGN 50 news item being visible in the message body instead of needing to click to the article; and loan reports giving deeper information at a glance. Additionally, scouting updates can be viewed in multiple formats, each with a clear list of players and ratings.

Fitness test messages house all player tests and outcomes in one table. Similarly, if a player receives a concussion, a trackable protocol is in place in the Medical centre, with players requiring clearance from a neurologist to be available for selection.

Connected to the Training and Tactical Effectiveness upgrades, inbox items for many aspects of match preparation are also adjusted. Match preparation types can be set for every session ahead of a match directly from the message; and the training schedule for the week can be edited within its relevant message. Returning elements to further support this are within the regular training breakdowns, where you can quickly give individual feedback to players, alongside a clear breakdown of team performance.

This includes further consideration around a player’s Out Of Possession role abilities in scouting reports, to assess if they match your tactical philosophy. Within the transfer negotiation process, your Director of Football offers further advice around fees and payment structures for transfers and loans.

Advice during a match will include information aimed at helping you choose when to deploy a Tactical Tweak, while between matches, suggested actions from staff meetings are all presented in a single message, with options to implement them collectively or individually.
