FM27: Tactical Tweaks and Match Engine Upgrades

Football Manager's Match Engine is driven by an impossible pursuit of perfection, to replicate the art of football in its digital form.

The visuals of the match day environment help to make every fixture feel like a richer piece of football theatre, but core to your immersion as a manager are the ways your players come to life on the pitch and the control you’re able to exert from the dugout.

Powered by trend-setting industry partnerships and contacts, FM27’s Match Engine adds new layers of depth and influence with enhancements to player movement and behaviour, as well as the introduction of a brand-new Tactical Tweaks system. Now, every match feels like more of a tactical battle between both the players and your opposition manager.

Better movement, better results

In addition to the player models and body types improving, a key focus for this year was enhancing the way players move, shift and react on the pitch.

Across the board, our multi-year partnership with HawkEye Innovations has been built on to introduce a greater variety of on and off the ball animations to make it even more rewarding to see your tactics take shape on the pitch.

Using HawkEye clips from real-life matches, combined with bespoke motion capture, has led to the introduction of a raft of new skill moves. Expect to see body feints, Elasticos, Heel Chops and more, as these moves and wider improvements to dribbling give your attacking players more weapons for taking on their opponent.

The world’s most skilful players stand apart for their individuality and therefore it’s no surprise that the ability to perform these skills in FM27 is tied to Attributes. Naturally, those with higher Flair and Dribbling showcase more personality with more creative and consistent attacks.

More realistic speed of movement

That increased dynamism and individuality of movement is reflected throughout the match simulation thanks to an evolution in players running speed.

Player speed and acceleration have long been areas we wanted to bring more in line with real football movement. Using Hawk-Eye Innovations data, we've completely overhauled our systems inside the engine, bringing them much more in line with real life and leading to matches having more of an authentic speed and tempo to them.

For example, players will no longer accelerate unnaturally quickly to recover defensively, or be able to turn at unrealistic speeds when making an off-the-ball run. All types of movements have been re-evaluated against real-world match data and improved across the board. Ultimately, smoother animations power more natural running movement to delivery gameplay that feels more believable.

In addition to improving the speeds at which players run, we've also made targeted improvements to how much players can run during the match before getting tired.

So, when your Wing-Back drives forward a long distance to join the attack, you'll see their physical exertion visibly reflected as they try to catch their breath.

Attributes are key, with Stamina now having a greater impact on your player's ability to both cover ground and make more repeated sprints with less recovery time. Stamina is also now a stronger factor on how your player’s condition deteriorates over the course of 90 minutes, meaning that players with lower stamina may struggle to keep sprinting heavily late in games, and substitutes can have a greater impact on results.

Sharper, smarter defending

We’ve also tackled the other side of the equation, with Defenders and defensive behaviour significantly upgraded.

Identified through internal testing and player feedback as a priority focus, 1v1 defending now feels like more of a dynamic duel between opposition players. Instead of relying on unnaturally fast bursts of acceleration to catch up with attackers, defenders will now move more intelligently thanks to the addition of new jockeying movements.

And, like their attacking counterparts, key defensive Attributes now have more weight – having elite Marking and Anticipation will more clearly set apart the dominant forces at the back.

The result is a team that feels sharper, more efficient, and better equipped to give you everything that’s in the tank.

Define your attacking style

Complementing these movements changes is an overhaul to the way that players attack the penalty area.

Our Match Team have analysed thousands of hours of real football to study modern trends and better reflect the decision-making of players on the attack. Player intelligence is now better rewarded, with smarter players better positioned to read the movements of teammates and opponents around them to create better opportunities. As such, you can expect less repetitiveness in attacks with players spreading out more and producing a greater variety of cutbacks, double movements, and crosses.

It’s not just the players that are better equipped, though. The team have also studied the way professional coaches operate on the training ground to give you more tools to play to your attacker’s strengths.

New Player Instructions have been introduced to allow you to instruct a player how you want them to attack the box. Your ability will vary by position but you’ll have the choice of asking a player to arrive late in the box, or directly attack the defensive line. In addition to that, you can then vary where they attack, whether it’s near post, far post or central areas.

Player Mental attributes are key here - those with higher levels of Anticipation and Off The Ball movement will make better, more intelligent runs. You might well see players doubling up in areas and making poor decisions if the team cohesion isn’t right, but the power and tactical control is in your hands to create new ways to overload the opposition.

Tactical Tweaks from the touchline

In FM27, you’ll also benefit from a new level of influence direct from the touchline with the introduction of Tactical Tweaks.

This system has been inspired by real conversations with contacts in the professional game and allows you to make team and individual-level tactical decisions based on the match playing out in front of you, without having to go to the Tactics Screen.

At an individual level, if you want to vary the challenges you’re presenting to the opposition full-backs, your wingers can now swap sides at the touch of a button. If you need a last-gasp equaliser, then you can have your ‘keeper join in the last gasp attack.

For your team, you’re now instantly able to ask your players to play with more urgency, go longer with the passes, exploit width or reduce the press. Tweaks will stay active as long as you want them to, and there’s no cap on how many you can have, although some are naturally contradictory.

Your staff will also now keep you better informed on the tactics changes your opposition manager is making during the match via the dugout system. Here, they’ll also advise you when they think would be a good time to use a Tactical Tweak, as well as when to stop using one.

Tweaks empower you to directly react to changes from your opposition manager in real time, making matches feel less passive and giving you greater ownership of the result when the final whistle goes.

Tactical Tweaks will work in tandem with Shouts, which still exist to give your players that immediate, emotional directive whether it’s tough love or praise for their hard work. Shouts have been rebuilt for FM27 with more contextual explanations and an overhaul to the way they impact your players, directly affecting their mental state rather than simply applying minor attribute boosts.

You will also now get better feedback on the outcomes of a team shout. Your staff will give you a summary of the effect your shout had on the team inside the dugout feed, while the squad bar will animate to highlight when a shout is communicated to the players and the resulting body language change. Within this, you’ll notice greater individuality in the reactions of your players based on their personality types and the game context.

The way you manage from the touchline should have a real tangible difference on what you’re seeing in front of you, and now you’ve got more ways to find that tactical edge.

Dive into the data

Alongside more tools, you’ve also got more game insights at your disposal, all visualised in a refreshed Match UI that’s adaptable to your preferences.

The between highlights screen now contains the capacity for tile swapping as well as adaptive layouts that scale to your monitor size. Find a look that works for you and take full advantage.

Here, you’ll discover a lot more data, including the return of Heat Maps and Action Zones. These form part of a wider data enhancement both in the match and in the Data Hub. This has been designed to give you more direct insights, whether that’s to help you prepare for your next match or to finalise your recruitment targets.

FM27’s Match Engine breathes new life into the 22 players competing on the pitch, and now you can control the strings as manager through more authentic movement, smarter decision-making and new tactical tools.

They combine to create a match experience that’s inspired by and closer to the professional game, and one you can react far more authentically in real time from the touchline.

In our next deep dive, we’ll take you back to the training ground and the tactics board as you discover our overhauls to Training and the brand-new Tactical Effectiveness system.

FM27 Match AI FAQs

  • In this FM27 deep dive, what were the main goals, changes and additions that the Sports Interactive team looked to address?

Combining community feedback and internal reviews, the key goals we aimed to achieve for this area of FM27 were:

    • Create more realism in player movement and animations, supported by an expanded partnership with HawkEye Innovations, leading to more believability and excitement when watching a match unfold
    • Address defensive players’ behaviour by updating jockeying and player speed
    • Improve the behaviour of attacking players through more detailed and realistic movements, such as skill moves, running speed and attacking the box
    • Introduce a new feature, Tactical Tweaks, to give you additional control over instructions during a match, alongside optimising Shouts
    • Adding more data on player performance and behaviour during the match day layout, with adaptive elements, ensuring useful data is easily available
  • What is the Tactical Tweaks feature and how does it work?

Tactical Tweaks give you more influence as a match unfolds, so you can quickly adapt to changes in game state. Designed following interactions with real managers, Tactical Tweaks allow you to deploy a combination of instructions at once, rather than making multiple manual tweaks in the Tactics menu. The tweaks available to you vary from simple adjustments, like swapping wide players to opposite flanks or sending the goalkeeper forward, to detailed moves that adjust multiple facets of your tactical plan. Tactical Tweaks are available on the match day screen alongside Shouts, and your tweaks remain active until you deselect them.

  • What changes have been made to Shouts in FM27?

The Shouts system has been revamped to give clearer guidance on the actions you can take and how they affect your players. Alongside changes to names of the Shouts, you’ll find additional detail around the implication of that Shout, as well as more variation in reactions to show how it has influenced a player’s body language and mood.

  • How have player animations been addressed to improve the realism of their movement and actions?

In a previous FM27 deep dive we explained how the visual model of players has been addressed; and alongside this, significant work has gone into making movement and animations more diverse, dynamic and believable. Thanks to the studio’s work with HawkEye Innovations, you'll now see more varied running motions when players are either on or off the ball. For attacking players, you will see new skill moves used on the ball, particularly by players with higher Flair. For defensive players, you will see more instances of jockeying and realistic body placement to halt the opposing player. These two improvements in tandem create more exciting and satisfying moments on the pitch.

  • What other changes to player movement have been added?

Running speed has been a major focus for upgrading player movement. Players move across the pitch more realistically, based on their Attributes, to bring player runs closer to real-life behaviour; and when a player is exhausted following a lung-bursting run, this will be more noticeable in their body language. A rebalancing of marking, passing and defensive setup has also taken place to balance and support these upgrades. A key change here is addressing how players attack the box. Further analysis of real football tactics has been utilised to make box attacks more varied and dynamic, with more intelligent players able to time and angle their runs effectively. Along with the visual improvement in movement that this provides, the mechanical changes mean you will be challenged to adjust tactics and decisions, to take full advantage of the advances in player behaviour.

  • What data points can I access during or after a match and how can it be adapted?

Whenever you’re not watching the live action, in FM27 you can view more data, more easily, to help you make informed tactical decisions. In line with our work across the wider game’s user interface, changes have been made to the layout and delivery of information during a match to give you more of what you need. Much like other menus and hubs in FM27, the match day screen can be adapted to your preferences via selected tile swapping, and improved adaptiveness to support different screens and layouts. After a match, the Data Hub provides insights on how the match unfolded, including the returning Pass Maps, visualising patterns of play and common areas where moves are started and chances are created.

  • Is the gameplay footage shown in this deep dive representative of what will be in FM27 on launch?

The gameplay shown is from a development build of the game, meaning it is subject to change before release. Additional work will be focused on further visual optimisation and incorporating feedback from recent user testing. This build contains information that is still under approval process by right holders and may contain data that does not, at this time, accurately reflect real world data.

  • Is there more to come for pre-launch looks at FM27 gameplay and changes?

Yes. Our next deep dive for FM27 will look at changes to Training and the new Tactical Effectiveness system, which further help you prepare for your next match and handle long-term training plans.
